The family of Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has revealed an alleged pre-election agreement with President Bola Tinubu, promising Kanu’s release.

Kanu’s brother, Kanunta, disclosed that the arrangement was brokered with Seyi Tinubu, the President’s son, during the buildup to the 2023 presidential election. According to Kanunta, the meeting was sanctioned by Tinubu himself.

In a statement, Kanunta expressed frustration that President Tinubu has failed to fulfill the alleged promise. He explained that IPOB agreed not to boycott the 2023 elections based on assurances that Kanu would be released if Tinubu emerged victorious.

“Before the election, I was contacted by a former governor who conveyed Seyi Tinubu’s request to meet me,” Kanunta stated. “The meeting took place in Abuja, with a witness present for verification purposes. Seyi confirmed that his father endorsed the discussion and assured me that any agreement reached would be binding.”

Kanunta further revealed that the understanding was communicated to Nnamdi Kanu, who subsequently reinforced IPOB’s non-interference stance during the elections. He also noted that during a campaign visit to Owerri, Tinubu publicly reiterated his commitment to Kanu’s release if elected.

Despite these assurances, Kanu remains in detention nearly two years into Tinubu’s presidency, with no charges filed against him. Kanunta also pointed out that Justice Binta Nyako recused herself from the case over three months ago, yet no new judge has been assigned.

“It defies logic that my brother is still held in custody under these circumstances,” Kanunta lamented.
