The federal government, led by President Bola Tinubu, is fully committed to implementing the new ₦70,000 minimum wage. This affirmation was made on Monday by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, following a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Akume commended state governments that have begun implementing the new minimum wage and urged those yet to do so to act promptly. He emphasized that the minimum wage is a priority for Tinubu’s administration, urging states not only to adopt the new wage but to implement it comprehensively.
“The new minimum wage has always been central to President Bola Tinubu’s government, which is why he quickly assembled a team to address this issue,” Akume stated. He highlighted that a tripartite arrangement involving governors, the federal government, and the organized private sector was established to discuss and finalize the new wage.
The SGF praised states that have exceeded the ₦70,000 benchmark, insisting that the implementation should be thorough and without compromise. “We are very satisfied with the progress. Some state governments have already begun implementing the new wage, and others have even surpassed it,” he noted.
For states that have not yet commenced implementation, Akume urged them to begin without delay. He reassured that the federal government is fully committed to this initiative, stating, “There’s no half measure about this at all. It’s full.”
Additionally, Akume revealed that his discussions with the President covered other aspects of state governance, further underlining the administration’s commitment to improving welfare across the nation.
