After striker Son Heung-min experienced “utterly disgusting” online racial abuse during Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League victory against West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur has urged social media companies to take action.
The 30-year-old captain of South Korea, Son, scored the second goal for Spurs four minutes after being substituted in during the London derby at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tottenham released a statement on Twitter saying, “We have been made aware of the completely abhorrent online racist abuse aimed against Heung-min Son during today’s match, which has been reported by the club.”
We support Sonny and once more urge authorities and social media firms to take appropriate action.
A Chelsea season ticket holder was permanently barred in August when Son was subjected to racial taunts during the team’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.
In response to the racial abuse that Brentford striker Ivan Toney received on Instagram, the anti-racism organization Kick It Out demanded this month that social media platforms implement “real reforms.”
On February 11, Toney came under fire after VAR did not rule out his equalizer in Brentford’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal for offside.
