Two children have died in separate well-related accidents in Kano State this week, the State Fire Service has confirmed.
Spokesman for the Service, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, disclosed in a statement that the first incident occurred on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, around 8:53 a.m. in Kashirmo Village, Sarkakiya area of Dawakin Tofa Local Government.
An eight-year-old girl, identified as Zara’u Muhammad, accidentally fell into a deep well. Residents made frantic efforts to rescue her before the arrival of the Fire Service, but the attempt failed due to the depth of the water. “Despite our special rescue efforts, the girl died,” Abdullahi said. Her body was later handed over to Abdullahi Garba, the Ward Head of the area.
In a similar tragedy, six-year-old Ahmad Abdurashid fell into a well on Wednesday, November 5, at about 10:02 a.m., in the Dandishe Tsamiyar Goodluck area of Dala Local Government. Firefighters recovered him unconscious, but he was later confirmed dead. His remains were released to his father, Abdurashid, in Dandishe Quarters.
The Director of the Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed concern over the recurring incidents and urged residents to take preventive measures. He advised communities to avoid digging wells along roadsides or in open areas and to ensure all wells are securely covered. He also appealed to parents to monitor their children closely to prevent further tragedies.
