Babatunji Wusu –

In a troubling escalation of violence, heavily armed assailants have launched a new attack on a police station in Oba, situated in the Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. This incident marks the third assault on law enforcement in the region in recent weeks, following similar attacks in Nnewi and Nnobi in August that resulted in the deaths of several officers.

On Tuesday morning, reports confirmed that a police corporal, whose identity has not yet been released, was fatally shot during this latest attack. The assailants, believed to be separatist militants, reportedly threw petrol bombs into the police station, igniting a fire that also affected the nearby Oba Civic Center.

State Command Public Relations Officer SP Tochukwu Ikenga provided details, stating, “The suspected armed secessionist group began by shooting sporadically to gain access to the police station, and threw petrol bombs, setting parts of the facility on fire. Tragically, a police corporal was killed, but the fire was extinguished with the help of other officers and a joint security response team.”

In response, a coordinated offensive has been launched involving police-led joint security forces, including the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other agencies. Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam condemned the attack as an invasion of security installations and an aggressive affront against security personnel. He vowed to ensure that those responsible for this violent act are brought to justice.
