In Ogun State, gunmen assaulted a Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) branch during a vigil service, killed the pastor, and abducted seven congregants. The unfortunate occurrence took place on Saturday, July 1, at Abule-Ori in the state’s Obafemi Owode local government area, according to the Nigerian Tribune.

According to Soji Ganzallo, the State Commander of the So-Safe Corps, who made this information public, the gunmen assaulted the RCCG Church at around midnight while the vigil was still going on.

Officers of the So-Safe Corps reportedly sprang into action after getting a distress call about the event, according to Ganzallo. They successfully freed the abducted church members without incident and killed one of the abductors in the process.

“The Special Operation Team of the Corps, Owode-Egba Zonal Command, under ACC Jimoh Rasaki Omoniyi, received a distress call that some members of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Desires of Nations Parish, under Ogun Province 22, Abule-Ori in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, were attacked during a vigil, while seven members of the church were kidnapped and the pastor was killed.”

The seven victims were recovered unharmed, while many of the suspects were seriously injured during a firefight and one of the kidnappers was killed, Ganzallo continued.

He further revealed that the police and the So-Safe Corps are pursuing the evading alleged kidnappers in an effort to apprehend them alive.
