United States President Donald Trump on Monday imposed a sweeping 25 percent tariff on any country that maintains commercial ties with Iran, marking a sharp escalation in Washington’s pressure campaign against the Islamic Republic.
Trump announced the decision in a post on his Truth Social account, declaring the measure effective immediately and non-negotiable.
“Any Country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will pay a Tariff of 25% on any and all business being done with the United States of America,” Trump wrote, adding that the order was “final and conclusive.”
The move threatens to disrupt U.S. trade relations with several major economies, including China, India, the United Arab Emirates and members of the European Union, many of which maintain varying degrees of economic engagement with Tehran.
Trump’s announcement followed reports by human rights groups that hundreds of people were killed during a violent crackdown on protests against Iran’s government, which reportedly intensified over the weekend.
The U.S. president had earlier warned that Washington could step in if Iranian authorities resorted to force against demonstrators, a position that now appears reinforced by the latest tariff decision.
