Two of the Chibok schoolgirls who were kidnapped have escaped after being held captive by Boko Haram for nine years.
According to sources who spoke with Daily Trust, the girls managed to flee the Sambisa forest on April 23, 2023, as a consequence of vigorous military operations.
Hauwa Mutah and Esther Markus were named as the escapees by a security source. One is from Chibok, and the other is from the village of Dzilang, according to the source.
As a result, there are now 96 rather than 98 Chibok schoolgirls being held captive. You may remember that on April 14, 2014, the terrorists kidnapped 276 girls from the Government Secondary School in Chibok.
“Of the 276 kidnapped Chibok girls, 57 managed to escape in 2014, and 107 were freed in 2018.” Three girls were found in 2019, two in 2021, and nine in 2022, bringing the total number of girls freed from captivity to 178, with 98 still being held by Boko Haram, he said.
