U.S. authorities have issued a wanted notice for Olalekan Abimbola Olawusi, a 48-year-old Nigerian man, offering a $25,000 reward for tips that lead to his arrest. Olawusi, who is believed to have fled to Nigeria, faces serious charges including first-degree murder and two counts of inflicting serious bodily injury to a child.
The charges stem from a tragic incident on April 3, 2017, in Providence, Rhode Island, where emergency responders discovered Olawusi’s 3-month-old son in critical condition, bleeding from his mouth and nose. The infant was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest, with injuries indicating prolonged abuse, including skull and rib fractures.
Despite being placed on life support, the child passed away six months later, on October 31, 2017. Following the infant’s death, the murder charge was added to the original charge of first-degree child abuse, which had been filed in April 2017.
After his initial arrest, Olawusi was released the same day and subsequently fled the country. Investigators believe he left the U.S. through John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York on June 20, 2017, using his Nigerian passport.
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) has conducted an extensive investigation into Olawusi’s whereabouts, and they believe he may be receiving help from family members in Nigeria. Authorities have expressed concern that Olawusi could pose a danger to other children.
Olawusi, who also goes by the alias Olekun Olawusi, is described as standing 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing 185 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.
Don Freeman, Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal, has urged anyone with information on Olawusi’s location to come forward, stressing the importance of bringing him to justice.
