The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has successfully trained 137 Education Secretaries from Local Government Universal Basic Education Authorities in the South-West region, underscoring the crucial role of quality primary education in strengthening Nigeria’s educational system.
The training, held in Ibadan from November 18 to 22, 2024, focused on the 2023/2024 Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme. UBEC’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, emphasized that the responsibilities of Education Secretaries in implementing basic education are vital and cannot be underestimated. Represented by Mr. Olusegun Akere, UBEC’s Zonal Assistant Director, Bobboyi highlighted the importance of continuous professional development for these key education leaders.
Education Secretaries, as administrative heads of Local Government Education Authorities, are tasked with ensuring the effective operation of primary schools in their areas. Bobboyi stressed that these leaders must be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to manage educational processes effectively, from providing resources to supervising school operations. He assured them of UBEC’s ongoing support in their professional development to improve learner outcomes.
Dr. Nureni Adeniran, Executive Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, commended the training for enhancing the capacities of Education Secretaries in managing grassroots education. He emphasized their pivotal role in the successful implementation of the UBE programme and pledged continued support from the state board to improve educational management skills.
Mr. Aleshin Mayowa, UBEC’s Director of Teacher Development, reiterated the importance of the training, noting that it reinforces the Commission’s commitment to empowering Education Secretaries as key stakeholders in delivering quality education at the local level.
