UK Leaders Gather in Kyiv for Ukraine’s Independence Day

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham arrived in Kyiv on Monday alongside several European leaders to mark Ukraine’s Independence Day and show support for the country amid its ongoing war with Russia.

Burnham was welcomed at Kyiv railway station by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who confirmed that the UK leader would join European Council President António Costa, Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, Moldovan President Maia Sandu and Estonian President Alar Karis.

Sybiha highlighted the importance of international support for Ukraine, saying, “For Ukraine, independence is not an abstract idea. We defended it against all odds. In times like these, nations learn how important it is to have allies by your side,”

The visit comes as Ukraine’s war with Russia continues, with Kyiv seeking stronger backing from its European partners.

During his visit, Burnham is expected to announce a major development involving Storm Shadow/Scalp missiles. The UK government plans to allow European defence company MBDA to declassify information about UK-made components used in the long-range missiles.

The move could help Ukraine develop its own version of the weapons and strengthen its domestic defence capabilities at a critical stage of the conflict.

The presence of European leaders in Kyiv also highlights continued political support for Ukraine as it marks another year of independence while facing Russia’s military campaign.

With the war continuing, stronger European cooperation could remain vital to Ukraine’s defence efforts and its ability to develop new military capabilities.
