Top political leaders from various wards in Obio/Akpor have come together in a strong display of solidarity for FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, organizing a solidarity march currently underway in Port Harcourt. The demonstrators have convened at the Rumueme Civic Center, with prominent figures leading the procession including Ogundu Chinda, the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Martin Amaewhule, the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and George Ariolu, a former Council Chairman.
The march, which is progressing along Ikwerre Road, has caused notable traffic congestion as the protesters advocate for the Inspector General of Police to maintain a presence in local councils and resist any forms of intimidation.
This demonstration of support for Wike occurs amidst heightened political tensions in Rivers State, exemplified by recent events such as the IPO community women’s protest at the Port Harcourt airport. This protest led to disruptions, leaving numerous travelers stranded.
In a separate development, former Council Chairmen from 21 out of the 23 Local Government Areas in Rivers State disregarded police advisories and staged protests in their respective council areas earlier in the week. These former chairmen, known for their pro-Wike stance, expressed their demands for continued police presence at council headquarters, displaying placards to underscore their message.
