Assets connected to the deceased former military head of state, General Sani Abacha, and his accomplices have been returned by the United States to the Nigerian government for about $20.6 million.
The money was transferred in compliance with an agreement between the two countries that was signed on August 23rd, according to a statement released by the US Department of Justice on Thursday, November 16.
“With the repatriation, the US has now forfeited and returned almost $332.4 million in this case. The agency returned about $311.7 million in confiscated property that was found in the Bailiwick of Jersey in 2020. The US verdict was enforced by the UK against the additional $20.6m last year.
A civil forfeiture case for more than $625 million that could be linked to money laundering with the revenues of Abacha’s coup resulted in a District of Columbia court ruling in 2014 ordering the seizure of roughly $500 million that was held in accounts around the world.
