The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced that the United States government has imposed a new $80 (N123,000) fee on shipments entering America from Nigeria and other countries.
In a notice issued on Friday, NIPOST revealed that the policy stems from an executive order signed by former President Donald Trump, which suspended duty-free treatment for all countries under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
The directive, effective August 29, 2025, mandates that all items—excluding letters and documents—sent to the U.S. from Nigeria must now attract a prepaid customs duty of $80.
NIPOST explained that the order applies globally, affecting all postal operators and administrations, not just Nigeria. It added that all shipments bound for the U.S. would also undergo additional customs checks upon arrival.
This development comes barely a week after Trump announced increased tariffs on imports from Nigeria and other nations, a move that drew sharp criticism from the Nigerian government, which has vowed retaliation.
