Tunji Wusu –
According to Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the West African sub-region will no longer tolerate coup after coup.
After being elected as the next Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Tinubu made this statement on Sunday.
The Authority of Heads of State and Government’s 63rd Ordinary Session in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, selected the Nigerian president.
He stated that he will prioritize political stability, peace and security, regional economic integration, and strengthening the ECOWAS institutions in order to demonstrate his commitment to regional integration.
In his speech, Tinubu stated that democracy and good governance continue to be the fundamental building blocks of peace and long-term progress.
He urged ECOWAS to take a bold stance in support of democracy while condemning the coup d’etat trend that is rising in West Africa, where troops have overthrown the people’s popular mandate with the use of lethal force.
“We must be adamantly pro-democracy. Without democracy, there can be no government, no freedom, and no rule of law. We won’t tolerate another coup in West Africa, Tinubu declared.
He also claims that while democracy is the best type of government in the world, it is incredibly difficult to run.
Tinubu takes over as ECOWAS chairman from Guinea-Bissau President Umaro Embalo.
Since taking office as president of Nigeria on May 29, 2023, Tinubu’s first engagement on the African continent was the 63rd Ordinary Session summit.
