After becoming the first woman to officiate a game at the men’s World Cup, Stephanie Frappart of France will go down in history during the Group E encounter between Germany and Costa Rica.
Along with Salima Mukansanga of Rwanda and Yoshimi Yamashita of Japan, Frappart was one of three female referees chosen for the World Cup pool in May.
The other female officials for the Germany vs. Costa Rica game are Mexican Karen Diaz Medina and Brazilian Neuza Back.
It will be the first time an all-female refereeing staff will oversee a men’s World Cup match.
This is not Frappart’s debut album. When she took charge of the Netherlands vs. Latvia match in 2021, she made history by becoming the first woman to officiate a men’s World Cup qualifying match.
When Juventus defeated Dynamo Kyiv 3-0 in the group stage of the 2020 Champions League, Frappart became the first female referee in a men’s game. Additionally, Stephanie monitored the 2019 UEFA Super Cup match between Liverpool and Chelsea.
In the same year, Frappart officiated the US vs. Netherlands women’s World Cup Final.
Reputable C.V. Karen Diaz Medina, from Mexico, who will help Frappart, also possesses a reputable C.V. She officiated the second leg of the Liga MX Guardanes 2020 final between Pumas and Leon, making history as the first female referee.
In 2018, Medina obtained FIFA assistant referee certification and officiated in numerous Concacaf competitions, including the Men’s Under-20 Championship in Bradenton, Florida, the Scotiabank Concacaf League, and the Women’s U-17 Championship in Managua, Nicaragua. Additionally, she was a member of the officials in the Houston, Texas, 2020 Women’s Olympic Qualifying.
The other assistant referee in the game, Neuza Back of Brazil, was a professional football player prior to becoming a referee. Back, who was elevated to FIFA in 2014, was requested to serve as a referee at the Copa América Feminina in Chile by the CONMEBOL Referees Commission. She presided over the 2018 CONMEBOL Libertadores Femenina in the same year.
