The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has revealed why the National Assembly did not pass the 2023 Appropriation Bill on time.
Lawal criticized the extensive cleaning process the draft budget proposal through, among others, stating, “Committees on Appropriation from both chambers couldn’t meet up with the submission of the report for discussion and passage on Thursday.
However, there were hints of this when the budget report was not published on the Order Paper for Thursday’s legislative activities.
Following a 15-minute closed-door session, Senate President Ahmad Lawan announced that the National Assembly will be unable to debate the 2023 budget due to incompatible data discovered by Appropriation committees in both Chambers.
Lawan, on the other hand, accused the executive branch of government for delivering the budget plan late and with flaws.
He also stated that the process of correcting the faults in the Appropriation bill was completed on Wednesday, “adding that the two chambers must harmonise the copy in order to provide the report for passage by both houses.”
Lawan also stated that the proposed budget will still be implemented on January 1, 2023.
