Festus Keyamo, a spokesman for the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council, has denied claims that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the candidate for president of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, was charged in the hotly debated US case.
In an appearance with Channels TV’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Keyamo made this claim.
The spokesperson for the APC was responding to criticism from the Labour Party, LP, which had made a claim that Tinubu had been charged in a US case.
Keyamo claims that when they claimed the APC presidential candidate was under investigation, they crossed the line.
If Asiwaju is not a defense attorney or was not a defendant in that case, there cannot be an indictment. I won’t say it again because I don’t want to seem like a broken record. In such circumstance, Asiwaju was not a party.
“It wasn’t him who was sued; it was merely an account. How could you indict him if there was no account if it was an account in his name that was being sued? Added he.
Keyamo answered simply, “Ten accounts in three banks,” when asked how many accounts were involved.
Not in one person’s name, he continued. Some of them had his mother’s name on them. Because they were all members of the Tinubu family, he assumed responsibility for them all. His company, his mother, and his brother were all present.
At the end of the day, they begged him to not sue them if it turned out that we had improperly confiscated your accounts in the first place.
Keyamo urged the general public to examine page 2 of the settlement that the attorneys signed in paragraph 6 of the document.
He emphasized that the attorneys were pleading with Tinubu not to take the lawsuit against them.
“It was him (Tinubu) who provided them with insurance. They were not telling him to leave and stop sinning in the opposite direction. Tinubu was the one ordering them to leave and stop sinning. Nigerians may read the documents there, he said.
