Wike Declares Control of Rivers Amid Crisis, Says “We Are in Charge”

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has openly asserted control over Rivers State despite the lingering political crisis, declaring that residents can “sleep with their two eyes closed” because, according to him, “we are in charge.”

Wike made the statement on Saturday in Ogu, Rivers State, during a grand civic reception organised in his honour by the Wakirike Ethnic Nationality.

While speaking at the event, the former Rivers State governor revealed how he recommended Boma Iyaye to President Bola Tinubu for appointment as Executive Director, Finance and Administration, of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

He explained that the decision was taken at a difficult moment when trust had become scarce amid political tensions in the state.

“When the President called me and said the position of Executive Director of Finance and Administration was coming to Rivers State, I was helpless because I didn’t know who to trust,” Wike said. “I looked left and right and prayed for God’s guidance. I thank God that He guided me well in recommending Boma Iyaye to Mr President.”

Wike stressed that his decision was not driven by material gain, noting that appreciation and loyalty mattered more to him than wealth.

“There is nothing wrong with appreciating people who have contributed to your life. Boma does not have the money to buy me anything I need, but for me, when people appreciate, ‘thank you’ is enough,” he said.

The FCT Minister also commended Iyaye for using his new position at the NDDC to positively impact his people, urging public office holders to maximise opportunities to serve.

“When you have the opportunity to impact the lives of your people, do not waste time. That opportunity may not come again,” Wike advised. “Position comes with envy and hatred, but God will bless you for making your people happy.”

Reaffirming his political influence in the state, Wike again assured Rivers residents of stability under his watch.

“I can tell you to go home and sleep with your two eyes closed. We are in charge,” he declared.
