The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) G5 of five disgruntled governors stormed Makurdi, the capital of Benue State, on Monday to launch the PDP 2023 campaign and inaugurate projects in the State.
Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi were also present in addition to the host, Governor Samuel Ortom (Enugu).
In order to back the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, in the 2023 elections, the five governors reportedly have insisted on Dr. Iyorchia Ayu’s resignation as PDP national chairman.
The Ortom administration’s 2.1 kilometer Township Road, which was built and is named after Governor Nyesom Wike, was among the projects that were officially opened on Monday.
Senator Gabriel Suswam, the State’s immediate-past governor, opened the road that goes to the PDP national chairman’s home and is located behind the Commissioner’s Quarters in Makurdi, the State’s capital.
Before the inauguration, the G5 took some time to speak to PDP supporters during a gathering held to raise support for all PDP candidates in Benue State, including Titus Uba, the state’s PDP governorship candidate and speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly.
Wike stated earlier on Sunday night that the PDP G5 members are united in their desire to save Nigeria and that no one will be able to sever their bonds as they continue to demand that Ayu step down from his position as the party’s national chairman.
“People have attempted to break us, but you cannot. To save Nigeria, we are obligated.
“As a result, we appear impenetrable when you observe the group as a whole. Nobody can split us apart. They have tried every method known to man to split us apart, but it hasn’t worked.
“The way we work; I’ll talk about it; we have non-talkers. You might be rating them too low. By the time they startle you, you would believe you are seeing Wike, but he is not, he claimed.
The G5 has been calling for Ayu’s resignation for months, arguing that northerners shouldn’t serve as the national chairman and presidential candidate of the PDP.
Ayu, a native of Benue, has maintained that he won’t leave office until the conclusion of his four-year term, despite the G5 requiring it in order to assist Atiku Abubakar, an Adamawa native, in his bid for the presidency in 2023.
