Women Storm Streets Backing Rivers Emergency Rule
Thousands of women flooded the streets of Port Harcourt on Monday, voicing unwavering support for the emergency rule imposed in Rivers State by President Bola Tinubu. The protest, marked by chants, placards, and impassioned speeches, amplified growing public divisions over the federal takeover.
The demonstrators, many dressed in white and waving pla cards, marched through major roads demanding stability and backing the appointment of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.) as Sole Administrator. Organizers said the move was necessary to “restore order” after months of violent political clashes between rival factions.
“We are tired of chaos. We want peace, and we stand with the President’s decision,” one protest leader declared, as the crowd cheered.
Critics, however, have slammed the federal intervention as unconstitutional and an erosion of democratic governance. But the protesters countered, saying the suspension of the governor, deputy, and assembly members was a bold step toward restoring law and order.
Security operatives monitored the demonstration closely, though no clashes were reported.
The protest signals a deepening divide in public opinion as Rivers State grapples with one of the most turbulent political chapters in its history.
