Babatunji Wusu –
According to reports, the staff members of the three universities under the ownership of the Ondo State government are set to begin an ongoing work stoppage today.
These universities include University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo; Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa; and Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA).
According to Naija News, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) of the universities formally announced the planned industrial strike in a press release on Sunday.
The JAC secretary, Kunle Akinwonmi, and chairman, Tayo Ogungbeni, signed the press release stating that the unions felt the strike was required to demand that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu pay the N35,000 wage award that was declared last year in order to lessen the impact of the loss of subsidies.
They mentioned that other state civil servants have received three tranches of payments.
Aside from the N35,000 salary award, the unions also demanded that OAUSTECH and UNIMED immediately implement the 2019 national minimum wage and that the statutory subvention to all state universities be increased by 100%.
