A viral video circulating across social media has sparked widespread outrage after showing a foreign national handing a small amount of money described by many as “peanuts” to a group of Nigerian police officers while casually filming the interaction.
In the video, the foreigner, whose identity remains unknown, is seen offering the money in a manner widely described as condescending and disrespectful. The officers, dressed in official uniform, are seen accepting the tip without protest an interaction that has reignited debate about the treatment, welfare, and dignity of Nigerian law enforcement personnel.
Many Nigerians have condemned the video, arguing that such behavior would not be tolerated in other countries, where police officers are treated with higher levels of professionalism and respect.
“You can’t try this in their own countries,” one user posted online. “Why are our officers even being assigned to people like this in the first place?”
The video has stirred deeper concerns about the poor remuneration of Nigerian police officers and the widespread practice of assigning them to serve private individuals particularly foreigners under vague or informal arrangements. Critics argue that such practices expose officers to potentially humiliating situations and undermine the integrity of the uniform.
“This is not just about a small tip it’s about how our officers are viewed and treated,” “They deserve more than this. They need proper pay, strong policies, and protection of their dignity.”
Public calls are growing for the Nigerian Police Force and the federal government to review existing deployment policies and ensure that officers are not placed in situations that could diminish their authority or self-worth.
As the video continues to trend across social media platforms, pressure is mounting on relevant authorities to respond both with disciplinary measures where necessary and, more importantly, with reforms that address the root issues of poor welfare and weak institutional support for law enforcement personnel.
At the time of reporting, the Nigeria Police Force has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
