Bello Matawalle, the governor of Zamfara, has ordered the state’s security services to jail anyone refusing to accept the old naira notes, claiming that doing so violates individuals’ fundamental rights.
The governor stated, in remarks made at an event on Friday, February 10, that the old currency notes will continue to be valid until the Supreme Court’s ultimate ruling on the issue.
Matawalle reportedly remarked, “Anyone who refuses to accept the old currency notes of N200, N500, and N1000 in the state should be arrested,” according to a statement by his media assistant, Jamilu Iliyasu.
