Governor Alex Otti’s Labour Party (LP) faced defeat in Abia’s local government elections on Saturday, as the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) took 15 chairmanship positions and the Young Peoples Party (YPP) won two. Announcing the results, Prof. George Chima, Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), congratulated both winners and runners-up, encouraging all parties to “embrace sportsmanship” while commending security personnel for maintaining peace.

However, logistical challenges marred the election, with voting materials arriving late at many polling units, leading to delays and low voter turnout. “I waited at my polling unit for hours,” shared Mrs. Joy Eze, a local hairdresser. Another resident, Mrs. Onyinyechi Ishmael, echoed frustrations, saying, “Votes hardly count in elections here.” Despite these issues, Chima urged citizens to uphold the state’s peaceful atmosphere.
