Alexander Zverev reached the Australian Open 2025 semifinals for the second consecutive year, battling through adversity to claim a 7-6 (7/1), 7-6 (7/0), 2-6, 6-1 victory over 12th-seeded Tommy Paul. Despite facing a challenging, hot, and windy day, the world number two triumphed in two tiebreaks and maintained his momentum to advance.

Zverev, who previously reached the semifinals in 2020 and 2024, remains on a mission to secure his first Grand Slam title after nearly a decade of close calls. In his bid to reach Sunday’s final, he will face either 10-time Melbourne winner Novak Djokovic or third seed Carlos Alcaraz.

Reflecting on his match, Zverev admitted that he was fortunate to win the first two sets, acknowledging his struggles but rallying in the fourth set for a dominant finish. “To be honest, I should have been down two sets to love,” he remarked. “But somehow, I won the first and second sets. The fourth set was definitely my best, and I’m extremely happy to be back in the semifinals.”

Zverev had already dropped his first set of the tournament in the fourth round but faced another challenge against the persistent Paul. The match featured a series of tense moments, including a controversial break point interruption due to a floating feather, which briefly unsettled Zverev. However, he quickly regained his composure to win the crucial points and seal the victory with an ace on his third match point.

Now, with his sights firmly set on the final, Zverev is determined to overcome his semifinal hurdles and make history as the first German man to win a Grand Slam since Boris Becker in 1996.
