Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has lost the support of 12 of his party’s governorship candidates, who criticized him for being undemocratic and unqualified to be president.
The candidates for governor include Iboro Robert Oru of Akwa Ibom, Aliyu Ahmed of Kwara, Ray Ken of Enugu, Mojeed Kehinde Okedara of Oyo, and Aliyu Adamu of Gombe.
At a news conference on Monday in Abuja, the contenders for governor spoke.
Speaking on their behalf, Robert Oru stated that Sowore had demonstrated his undemocratic nature by serving as both the party’s National Chairman and presidential candidate, noting that this prevented the party from being inclusive.
He continued by saying that Sowore entered the race for the party’s presidential nomination against their advice and that the party now employs divide-and-conquer strategies that are unnecessary for Nigeria and Nigerians.
“Over the past six months, as gubernatorial candidates and devoted African Action Congress party members, we have grown to notice and have voiced concerns about the readiness, leadership, and attitude of our presidential candidate, Omoleye Sowore, who also serves as the party chairman.
“As a presidential candidate, against our counsel of inclusivity in party/team building and consolidating statewide structures, it is obvious he is not in the running, and it is also clear that his basic lack of political experience and counterproductive divide-and-rule leadership style is NOT what Nigeria and Nigerians need at this time of national healing, nor will it lead us or the party to any socio-political or electoral victory.
As a result, Robert Oru stated, “We have chosen not to support Omoleye Sowore’s presidential campaign.”
He said that the organization had abandoned Sowore’s bid for the presidency and would soon reveal their chosen candidate.
