In New York on Thursday night, a double-decker tour bus crashed with another bus, injuring scores and sending at least 18 people to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to emergency personnel.
According to Kevin Murphy, a deputy fire chief in New York, the incident happened around 7:00 pm (2300 GMT) in lower Manhattan along First Avenue close to the Gramercy Park region.
Images from the incident showed a double-decker tour bus with an open top colliding with a city bus’ rear end.
Paul Hopper, a deputy chief from the fire department’s emergency medical services branch, claimed that “both buses seem to have been fully occupied.”
18 victims have currently been transferred to nearby hospitals, according to Hopper. None of the injuries are life-threatening.
According to him, medical staff at the scene were evaluating an additional 63 people in the two vehicles.
“Many injuries are just cuts, bruises, scrapes, some suspected fractures, and some head and neck injuries as well,” added Hopper.
Fire departments had to evacuate passengers from the double-decker bus using ropes and ladders, according to Murphy, who would not speculate as to what may have caused the collision.
The injured people’s nationalities were not immediately known.
