Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has ruled out any possibility of the Labour Party (LP) joining a coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections, insisting that the party already represents a broad alliance of Nigerians.
Otti made the declaration on Saturday while briefing journalists after the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja. He argued that the LP, by its nature and composition, functions as a coalition of Nigerian workers and citizens with progressive ideals.
According to the governor, talks about the party aligning with other political platforms are misplaced, as the LP does not see the need for such arrangements.
“Labour is already a coalition. This is the coalition of Nigerian workers and people who are progressive and like-minded,” Otti said. “So when people talk about joining another coalition, we have no such plans.”
The NEC meeting came just days after a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja upheld the removal of Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman. The court also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee as the legitimate leadership of the party.
Confirming compliance with the ruling, Otti disclosed that INEC had acted on the court order by removing Abure’s name from its official website and replacing it with that of Senator Usman.
However, the leadership crisis within the Labour Party remains unresolved, as Abure has rejected the judgment. He described the ruling as unacceptable and announced plans to approach the Court of Appeal in a bid to overturn the decision.
