29-Year-Old Nigerian-British Woman Becomes UK’s Youngest Mayor

Princess Opeyemi Bright has made history as the youngest Mayor in the United Kingdom at age 29. She was officially sworn in as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham on May 16, 2025.

Born in the UK to Nigerian parents, Bright’s election marks a milestone in youth leadership and diversity in British politics. Her rise to political prominence has been hailed across the Nigerian diaspora and social media.
