A vehicle in the Kogi State town of Okene was crushed by an articulated vehicle at around 7.30 p.m. on Sunday, leaving five people dead and four others with serious injuries.
The Federal Road Safety Corps’ (FRSC) Sector Commander in Kogi State, Steve Dawulong, verified the accident.
He claimed that at Oro Junction, Okene in the state’s Okene LGA, an articulated vehicle struck a taxi.
According to eyewitness reports, if it weren’t for the automobile acting as a wedge to keep it from reaching the people seated at the opposite road leading to Ageva, more people would have been killed or severely injured.
According to the Sector Commander, Steve Dawulong, the accident actually happened at around 7: 30 p.m. at the Oro crossroads in Okene, where a truck brake malfunctioned and rammed into a passenger car from behind, killing four people and injuring four more.
He claims that “the injured were taken by their individual families while the deceased were transported to Okengwe General Hospital Mortuary.”
While expressing his sympathy to the victims and their families, Dawulong recommended fleet operators to have effective maintenance plans that should be carefully followed in order to ensure regular maintenance and vehicle roadworthiness before putting such vehicles on the road.
