During various operations across the country in 2023, the military killed 6,886 terrorists and other criminal elements.
The military went on to say that 6,970 suspects were detained and approximately 4,488 kidnapped individuals were released nationally.

At a press briefing on Friday in Abuja, Maj-Gen Buba Edward, Director of Defence Media Operations, disclosed this. The purpose of the briefing was to update the public on the army’s 2023 operations.

He said that 60 million liters of diesel and 100 million liters of pilfered crude oil were found as a consequence of the year’s military activities.

“During that time, troops eliminated 6,886 terrorists and other criminal elements,” he stated. Officers apprehended 6,970 suspects, freed 4,488 hostages who had been kidnapped, and retrieved 3,320 different weapons and 39,075 different rounds of ammunition.

In addition, the forces found 3,465,450 liters of DPK, 3,544,990 liters of PMS, 60,339,426 liters of AGO, and 100,316,600 liters of crude oil.

Banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, oil theft, secessionist movements, and conflicts between farmers and herders were among the country’s top security challenges in 2023, according to Buba.

According to him, there are geopolitical zones that define the dynamics of danger, some of which transcend geographical bounds.

Buba claims that all six geographic zones have high rates of kidnapping, armed robbery, intercommunal strife, and livestock rustling.

Buba detailed that “The predominant threat in the North-Central and North-West regions is armed banditry/terrorism while the Boko Haram terrorists/Islamic State West African Province lingering insurgency remained the main threat in the North-East region.

“The major threat in the South-East and South-West was the secessionist agitations of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and the Yoruba Nation respectively.

“The South-South region continued to experience oil theft, cultism, and youth restiveness. However, acts of criminalities such as kidnapping, armed robbery, communal clashes and cattle rustling were common across the six geopolitical zones.”
