On Friday morning, armed men stormed Hale Gabriel Longpet, the Kogi Resident Electoral Commission’s official house in Lokoja.
Kogi is one of the three states that had off-cycle gubernatorial elections lately, with Usman Ododo of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) becoming victorious.

In a statement, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman Rotimi Oyekunmi stated that the gunmen entered the home at approximately 3:30 in the morning and engaged security personnel in gun combat.

The statement demanded a comprehensive inquiry into the event and stated that many pieces of property were damaged, despite the fact that no lives were lost.

The incident occurred two days after a crowd blocked the INEC headquarters in Lokoja, making it impossible for employees to enter the building.

The statement says: “Our Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Lokoja, Kogi State, was ambushed by gunmen at roughly 3.30 am on Friday, December 1, 2023, in the early hours of the day.

“Until reinforcement arrived, the armed men engaged the security personnel in a gunfight that lasted more than half an hour.”

“In the subsequent gunfight, property was destroyed but no lives were lost. To secure the home, a group of security officers has been dispatched. This happened the day after our state office was overrun by protesters.

“We demand a comprehensive inquiry and increased security measures to safeguard our employees and property in Kogi State.”
