The Oyo State House Assembly has called on concern State authorities to urgently repair the collapsing bridge along the University of Ibadan, UI and Agbowo express area of Ibadan to avoid complete collapse, and possible lost of lives.
The lawmakers described the part bridge which collapsed due to frequent heavy rainfall, as a threat to lives of commuters plying the roads and residents of Agbowo community.
Speaking with newsmen during the visitation, the State lawmaker representing the area, Ibadan North Constituency II, Hon. Babajide Adebayo noted that hundredth of thousands of persons make use of the collapsing bridge daily being the premier university community area and also as the shorted route connecting UI and Ojoo-Iwo road expressway.
According to Babajide, aside the threat to lives of the people plying the road day and night, the complete collapse of the bridge if not repair urgently will affect the livelihood of the traders, businessmen and women around the area.
“My people called my attention to the collapsing bridge, I came to visit it immediately and obviously it is very dangerous if nothing is done as quick as possible.
“This is a university community, the premier University of Ibadan. Many students’ hostels are around here, many businesses and even commuters plying this road on a daily basis, therefore we need to prevent any looming danger.
“That is why, I told the Speaker of the house and my other honourable colleagues to come and see themselves, and we are already making reasonable progress by contacting concern agencies so that the bridge can be repaired before it collapse completely or even take lives,” he added.
In his comments, the Oyo State Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin emphasized that the lives of the people and their livelihood are paramount to all lawmakers in the State being their representatives in government.
He said, “government infrastructure have lifespan and are meant to depreciate, but we are here as the representatives of our people to make sure when such things happen it does not affect the general wellbeing of our people.
“Hon. Babajide is proactive and has always being a voice in the 9th assembly, that is another reason why we are here, we are taking swift action on this and we assure the good people of Ibadan North and Oyo State that this will be fix in no time.”
