The Anambra State Government has directed that all primary and secondary schools in flood-affected districts close immediately.
This comes after the state’s terrible floods, which inundated neighborhoods and forced a large number of citizens to leave their homes in several communities.
It was learned that 12 out of the state’s 21 local government areas—which the authorities had identified as flood-prone areas—would be affected by the shutdown.
Mrs. Chioma Unachukwu, a personal assistant of Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, the state’s commissioner for education, made the statement in public on Tuesday.
She claims that the action complies with the previously released 2021–2022 Special Academic Calendar for Riverine and Flood-Prone Areas.
“I am directed to express the Honourable Commissioner’s consent for the immediate closure of all schools in riverine and flood-prone parts of the state in accordance with the already published 2021–2022 Special Academic Calendar for riverine and flood-prone areas of the state,” she added.
The worst-hit areas, according to the relevant authorities, are Anyamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, and Ogbaru local government areas, among others.
