When Jamilu Gwamna, the PDP’s second-place candidate, defected to the ruling All Progressive Congress on Saturday, the crisis roiling the opposition party in Gombe took a new turn (APC).
At a press conference held at his home in Orji Estate, Gombe, Gwamna stated that he had decided to leave the PDP due to irreconcilable differences after Jibrin Barde was chosen as the party’s candidate for governor.
Since then, Barde has apparently been engaged in a conflict with party factions, which he has characterized as unimportant to his chances of winning the governorship in 2023.
However, Gwamna bemoaned the Gombe PDP’s lack of togetherness, which he claimed to be the key component to any political party’s success.
He remarked, “I’m writing to you now to officially advise you that I’ve left the PDP and that I’ve rejoined my party, the All Progressive Congress.
He gave several reasons for leaving the PDP, including internal strife, subpar leadership, a lack of respect for the law inside the party, and divisiveness.
He claims that the PDP’s State leadership has mismanaged the party’s affairs, resulting in many groups.
Unity, inclusivity, fairness, and justice, he claimed, were the foundations of his political philosophy, and “if those are not present in the party then there is no need to remain in that camp.”
The PDP cannot run Gombe State, according to Gwamna, who is also the Sardauna of Gombe, because of the leadership it now possesses, which he claims prioritizes individual interests over group interests.
“In politics, internal democracy is very important, and if you can’t see that playing out, then practicing democracy on a wider platform like running the state becomes a significant problem.”
According to Gwamna, the APC is the best organized party in Gombe and has conducted business in a more familial fashion.
He urged his followers to mobilize local support across the State so that the APC could keep Gombe with a larger margin of victory than in 2019.
Gwamna added that he has been chosen to serve as the State’s Gombe Coordinator for the governorship and presidential campaigns.
