Attahiru Bafawara, a former governor of Sokoto State, has urged security organizations to stop attacks on the South-East and South-West offices of the Independent National Electoral Commission in advance of the 2023 general election.
Bafarawa emphasized that it would be impossible to hold an election in a peaceful manner if hoodlums were constantly attacking INEC offices.
The former governor encouraged security authorities to continue their efforts to thwart similar attacks.
Remember that during the past three years, unidentified individuals have attacked INEC officials in Imo, Byelsa, Akwa Ibom, Abia, and Taraba, among other states.
“I think this issue is a subject of concern,” he stated, “since it is terrible that we still receive stories about attacks on INEC offices in various parts of the country as elections get near. First and foremost, I urge the security agencies to work more to stop it.
“Second, people torching INEC offices do not have the best interests of the nation at heart. What is their objective? They want the election to take place, don’t they? What will be anticipated on May 29, 2023? Those who will be present will still need to be there illegally if there is no election.
Bafarawa, who also discussed the necessity for the nation to safeguard its democracy, stressed that it was crucial that errors be fixed whenever they were made.
So, in order for democracy to continue, he said. Nothing less than democracy in the nation is what we desire. We have been putting this democracy into practice for the past 20 years.
“Errors were being committed. We fix our errors whenever we find them. Developed nations had humble beginnings. In the end, we are comparing our system with the United States of America because there are only two political parties there.
