Idris Elba will reprise his role as DCI Luther in a new Netflix film, and we now have the official title and release date, as well as a few first-look photographs for you to enjoy!
The title of Netflix’s Luther film will be Luther: The Fallen Sun, an obvious play on words considering the character’s previous history. Netflix has announced that Luther: Fallen Sun will begin streaming in March 2023, though no specific date has been specified.
Idris Elba recently teased veteran Luther fans with the concept that the next film will take the character (and viewers) to some fairly crazy areas – whether they are old fans or new followers:
“If you saw the previous season, it picks up after that. But I think the film is an entire story for new audiences who haven’t seen it, so even if you don’t know where Luther is, who he is, or what, anything about him, the film aims to be whole for a new audience “Elba elaborated on the Jess Cagle Show. “We just wrapped filming around three weeks ago. It was a depressing shoot. Oh my goodness. As I read the screenplay, it’s all in good humor. I’m thinking, “And then what does he do? Oh my goodness, this is wonderful “and then I actually do it. I’m cold in some dark cave or something. There are no spoilers.”

Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes, The Lord of the Rings) and Cynthia Erivo will also appear in Luther: Fallen Sun (Bad Times at the El Royale, Harriet). Serkis and Erivo will pose a “dual menace” to Idris Elba’s Luther; Erivo will play a police detective who will become “Luther’s enemy.” Serkis will play “the story’s criminal villain,” which may indicate some very bad things in Luther’s universe.
Neil Cross’s Luther television series premiered on BBC One in 2010. The show features DCI Luther (Elba), a seasoned investigator who specializes in tracking down and apprehending heinous serial killers. The series began with the twist of Luther developing a complicated relationship with a master serial killer named Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), which set in motion a slippery slide into the morally gray limbo of side-stepping rules and regulations in order to make his cases, often trying to stay ahead of his own fellow cops, local gangsters, whatever killer he is hunting, and persistent problems like Alice Morgan – not to mention trying to maintain any kind of personal life or relationship.
Luther Series 5 concluded with Luther at odds with local criminal Geroge Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) as a result of Alice’s murder of his son. Alice didn’t stop there: she also murdered a detective (Catherine Halliday) that Luther was developing close to in order to prevent Luther from forming any connections outside of her. In “Fallen Sun,” Luther will undoubtedly have to keep a lot of plates spinning while he seeks this new killer.
Luther: Fallen Sun will be available on Netflix in March 2023.
