Nigerian military have apprehended a deputy leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who is accused of killing Ahmed Gulak, a political adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The suspect, Nwagwu Chiwendu, was apprehended on Tuesday while attending his father’s funeral in Mbaise, Imo State, Nigeria’s south-east.

Mr Chiwendu was to be the IPOB’s chief trainer in weapon handling, and he later climbed to become Temple’s second in command, who is now the state leader of the group.

Mr Chiwendu, the suspect, is reported to have abandoned the Nigerian Army and joined IPOB’s militant arm, Eastern Security Network (ESN), on January 21.

“He served on the OPHK and thus has operational experience. He was apprehended yesterday during his father’s funeral in Mbaise. He’s transporting us to their camp at Obowo tonight.

“He admitted to killing Gulak and confirmed that his camp is responsible for kidnapping the two expatriates along Owerri-Okigwe Road and the killing of two police inspectors escorting them.

“They are the ones that also killed our guys in the same spot and the burning of our Hilux last week. They also took part in the attack on the INEC office in Owerri. “He is currently with the police,”

Mr Gulak, a leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress, was assassinated by gunmen on May 30, 2021, in Owerri, Imo State.

The attack occurred while the lawmaker was his route to Abuja from Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri.

The state police would later charge members of the IPOB and its militant branch, ESN, with the murder of the former political aide.

IPOB is an organization that is leading the call for an independent state of Biafra to be formed from areas of Nigeria’s south-east and south-south.
