Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has reaffirmed his support for local government autonomy in the state.
He made the remark during a ministerial briefing, which is being held to consult with all ministries, departments, and agencies on how to take the state to new heights.
The governor, who was represented by his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi, emphasized the importance of local government, noting that the grassroot government is where the people receive the dividends of democracy.
“Granting autonomy to local governments is completely consistent with the principles of federalism,” he says.
He observed that the political class has crippled the entire gamut of local government administration over the years, rendering it insignificant and thus anti-progressive.
Earlier, the coordinating director of the Local Government Service Commission, Mr Lekan Babalola, praised the governor for giving in to the people’s desires by granting autonomy to the grassroots government.
He claimed that the move would hasten development in all nooks and crannies of the state.
