Luka Modri is back with the Croatian national team, playing in two European Championship qualification matches with a 25-man roster that was announced on Monday and includes Petar Musa of Benfica.
The 37-year-old Modri declared that he wanted to “stay until at least the Nations League and after we will see” after leading Croatia to victory over Morocco in the World Cup third-place match last year.
On June 14, Croatia will take the field in Rotterdam against the host Netherlands to open the four-team UEFA Nations League Championships. Four days later, the victor faces either Spain or Italy in the championship match.
Modri should first increase the 162 appearances he has already made for Croatia in Euro 2024 qualifying. On March 25, Croatia will host Wales before traveling to Turkey three days later.
22 players, including Musa, 25, were part of Zlatko Dali’s roster for Croatia, which he took to the World Cup in Qatar.
Armenia and Latvia are also included in the group of five qualifying nations. For the Euro 2024 competition in Germany, where Modri will be turning 39, the top two teams proceed.
The Real Madrid midfielder finished fourth in last week’s FIFA Best Player Award vote. The medal went to Modri four years ago after Croatia lost to France in the World Cup final.
