In response to racist comments made on social media about defender Kyle Walker-Peters during Southampton’s goalless draw with Manchester United, the Premier League team confirmed on Monday that it had contacted the police.
After injuring United’s 18-year-old Alejandro Garnacho in a challenge, which led manager Erik ten Hag to pull his second-half replacement, Walker-Peters, 25, was criticized online.
Ten Hag confirmed that Garnacho had twisted his ankle as he subsequently exited Old Trafford on crutches. Garnacho has four goals and four assists on the season.
Southampton said: “The club issued a statement in February 2021 regarding the awful racial abuse that one of our young players received following a game against Manchester United.
“More than two years later, we still find ourselves in the same predicament: disgusted and disappointed by the actions of those online who descend to insulting players due to their skin color.
Equally frustrating is how little the social media platforms have done over the past two years to stop such hatred from growing and festering.
Saints claimed that they have reported the posts to the social media sites and that they have transferred the texts to Hampshire Police.
The club continued, “We can only hope that they eventually pay attention to what still remains a significant problem and that we do not find ourselves repeating these comments in another two years time.
