Excellent Edwin-Isotu, a student, won the 2023 Junior Category and will represent Rivers State at the Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition. He is 13 years old.

Master Edwin-Isotu, a graduate of Graduate High School in Port Harcourt, will compete on behalf of the state in the national competition, which will take place in Rivers State from July 26 to July 29.

The Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition’s national coordinator, Abdulsalam Ibrahim, stated in a statement on Tuesday that the competition’s purpose was to encourage literacy among Nigerian kids and to reward learning with incredible chances.

The competition, according to Mr. Ibrahim, is essential because many young people have developed the practice of shortening words while writing and blaming social media for the trend.

He asserted that knowledge of the English language was a requirement for learning and that it was important for everyone, especially students and young people who were the nation’s future.

“We aspire to generate the very finest writers and readers to make Nigeria proud. We have been charged by the Federal Ministry of Education to produce the best of Nigeria and project them as Team Nigeria at world arenas.

“To encourage proper spelling of frequently used English terms and advance pupils’ knowledge, spelling contests are held among Nigerian school students.

The spellers must study words from the dictionary; we do not provide them with words to learn. Essays are required at the national level as well.

A study guide had been created, according to Mr. Ibrahim, to help spellers and explain spelling principles, and the competition was intended to improve learning for both spelling and conceptual comprehension.

He observed that spellers were actively developing their communication and public speaking abilities as well as their sense of self.

According to him, the organization was concerned about the frequent errors that writers and students made while using English words and the three main Nigerian languages.

Evans Kingsley, Master Edwin-Isotu’s tutor, is confident that the young man would represent Rivers State admirably at the National Finals and beyond.

I believe we will prevail because I can see that you have faith in him, and he has demonstrated that.

Winners of the Regional Stage will go to the National Finals, where they will fight for a chance to win a Grand Prize of N1,000,000 Scholarship, among other awards, according to The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

More than 700 kids from Rivers State’s secondary, primary, and institutional levels took part in the competition.

The national champions will also receive an expense-paid trip to Ethiopia in November to compete in the African Spelling Bee Competition on behalf of Nigeria.
