The National Center for Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has issued a warning on the actions of fictitious security companies that pose as organizations in charge of controlling illegal weapons in the nation.
As a result, it warned people in every country to be cautious of fakes.
Major-General Ifiok Obot, the South-South Zonal Coordinator for NCCSALW, advised the public to report such groups to local security agencies in a statement.
He reiterated that his organization was the only one of the national governments established to control the spread of small guns and light weapons.
Obot claimed that the NCCSALW was established by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution A/RES/55/25, which acknowledged the recent proliferation of small arms and light weapons in the nation and the rest of the world, which he claimed has led to an increase in kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry, and terrorism cases.
The ECOWAS Convention on SALW, Ammunition and other Related Materials (2006) and the United Nations Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate Illicit Trade in SALW (2001), both of which Nigeria is a signatory, were referenced by the zonal coordinator as legal papers for the management of SALW.
“The center has been given the task of working with essential parties to track the accumulation and movement of illicit SALW inside the nation by exchanging reliable and useful information. It keeps an eye on the nation’s international boundaries and communicates with regional and international organizations about the movement of SALW, the coordinator continued.
