The Niger Republic’s military junta has severed ties with Nigeria following the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) efforts to resolve the country’s protracted leadership issue.
According to the Daily Post, ECOWAS has given the military junta a seven-day deadline to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
On Thursday, August 3, 2023, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu dispatched a high-powered delegation to the country to meet with the coup leaders.
However, the team led by General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) only met with junta leaders, noting that Niger has long-standing relations with Nigeria, Togo, France, and the United States.
In a statement made on national television, one of the coup leaders was quoted by Radio France International as saying, “The duties of the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassadors of the Republic of Niger to France, Nigeria, Togo and the United States are terminated.”
