In a thrilling Premier League match at Old Trafford on Saturday, Manchester United defeated Nottingham Forest 3-2 thanks in part to a 3-2 comeback triumph from Bruno Fernandes, who converted a penalty after the home team had given up two goals in the first five minutes.
After two minutes, Taiwo Awoniyi sprinted through to give Forest the lead, leaving the home fans in shock. Two minutes later, an unmarked Willy Boly headed in the second goal, shocking the audience once more.
After 17 minutes, Christian Eriksen started the comeback by touching in a cross from Marcus Rashford, but despite United’s pressure, Forest still posed a serious threat.
In the 52nd minute, Casemiro scored from close range, and Forest was reduced to 10 men when Joe Worrall was sent off for bringing down Fernandes outside the penalty area.
Ten minutes later, after a brief collision between Danilo and Rashford, Fernandes stepped up to the penalty spot and beat American goalkeeper Matt Turner to secure United’s second victory of the year.
United struggled to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers in its first game after being defeated by Tottenham Hotspur the previous weekend. Against Forest, United was in disarray early on.
But it came back resolutely to come from two goals behind at Old Trafford and win a Premier League game for just the third time. However, it was not convincing against a Forest team that played with initiative and deserved to win.
Within two minutes, Awoniyi’s danger of a counterattack materialized as he pounced on a United corner clearance, punched the ball past Rashford in the center circle, and sped off to slot past Andre Onana.
Awoniyi made history by becoming the first Forest player to score in seven straight league games.
When Boly was given room to head the ball into the goal for Forest’s second goal, United’s defense was equally ineffective.
When forced into action, Fernandes forced Turner into a stop, but Forest failed to clear the ball, allowing Rashford to outmuscle Serge Aurier and cross low for Eriksen to start the comeback.
On the verge of halftime, Forest had a chance to reclaim a two-goal advantage, but the brilliant Morgan Gibbs-White’s goal-bound strike hit Awoniyi instead.
The equalizer by United was executed well. Rashford swung in a free kick, and Fernandes headed the ball to Casemiro, who converted a clear opportunity earlier.
Although it was difficult for Forest, who had opportunities to earn a point in the 13 anxious minutes of stoppage time, Fernandes provided the winner in an almost inevitable fashion.
The goal by Andersen propels Palace to a 1–1 draw against Brentford.
At a soggy Community Stadium on Saturday, Joachim Andersen of Crystal Palace and Brentford drew 1-1 in a Premier League match. Kevin Schade had given Brentford the lead in the first half.
In the 18th minute, Schade scored his first goal while wearing a Brentford jersey. He did this with a fantastic solo effort that involved cutting in from the left wing and eluding two Palace defenders.
Odsonne Edouard’s free kick was stopped by Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken, who then made two saves in quick succession to stop Jefferson Lerma and Jordan Ayew from scoring. Palace looked much sharper in the second half and produced a flurry of chances.
In the 77th minute, Andersen scored after a one-two with Ayew, sneaking in to push a shot under the advancing Flekken and take a share of the spoils as the Brentford players watched helplessly. This was the last reward for Palace’s relentless siege.
