On Saturday in the Premier League, Joao Palhinha scored in the 87th minute to give 10-man Fulham a 2-2 draw at Arsenal.

A defensive blunder by Arsenal gave Fulham the lead after just 57 seconds, but the Gunners rallied back to lead 2-1 thanks to goals from Bukayo Saka and Eddie Nketiah in the second half. However, the hosts were unable to hold on to the victory since Palhinha scored the late equalizer while going unnoticed. That was true even though Fulham lost a man in the 83rd minute when Calvin Bassey received a second yellow card.

After suffering a knee injury, Gabriel Jesus of Arsenal entered the game for the first time this year, but the Gunners were unable to secure a victory in the nine minutes of added time. After starting the season with two victories, it was Arsenal’s first loss of the year, and the defeat was primarily their own fault.

When Saka misplayed a back pass, Andreas Pereira was able to get in on goal with goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale well outside of his area, giving Fulham the early lead. Pereira easily slid the ball past Ramsdale and into the open net as he retreated toward the goal.

In the first half, Arsenal had a few good chances to tie the score, but they failed to take advantage of them. Gabriel Martinelli alone forced three saves from Bernd Leno. The best opportunity fell to Kai Havertz in the 11th minute when Saka met a cross at the far post and prodded the ball toward goal. The German sprinted in but could only send the ball beyond of the goal.

When Ben White allowed the ball to fall to Raul Jimenez, who nearly scored with a magnificent overhead kick that went just wide of the post, Arsenal gave Fulham another opportunity.

Jimenez made his first appearance at the Emirates since sustaining a fractured skull in a head incident in 2020 while playing for Wolverhampton and missing nearly a year of action.

Up until Fabio Vieira’s introduction, Arsenal failed to produce quality chances in the second half of a match played amid a thunderstorm that lit up the sky above Emirates Stadium. When the Portuguese midfielder was taken down in the area, Saka calmly converted the resulting penalties.

Then, a few minutes later, Nketiah gave Arsenal the lead by tucking in a low cross from Vieira. Bassey had been down following a challenge on Saka in the area moments before, but play continued nevertheless, according to Fulham, and manager Marco Silva was booked as a result of his complaints.

When Bassey was dismissed, Arsenal appeared poised to hold onto the lead, but further careless defense after a corner allowed Fulham to draw even.
