NDC members attacked during a grassroots mobilisation meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State on Saturday, 12 September 2026.
The gunmen reportedly stormed the meeting at about 3:40pm while members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress were holding a voter sensitisation exercise.
One person was reportedly shot during the attack.
Witnesses said party members and other attendees fled the venue in panic as the gunmen opened fire.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. There was also no immediate confirmation of the identity of the attackers or whether any arrests had been made.
A video from the scene shows people seated at the meeting shortly before the incident. The footage reportedly captures the gathering before the attack disrupted the event.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the safety of political gatherings, particularly as parties step up grassroots mobilisation and voter engagement.
Political meetings often bring together party officials, supporters and members of the public. Therefore, attacks at such gatherings can disrupt political activities and create fear among voters.
The reported shooting also comes at a time when political parties are using grassroots meetings to strengthen their presence and engage directly with communities.
However, security agencies have yet to publicly establish what led to the incident.
Further investigation will be needed to determine who carried out the attack, why the meeting was targeted and whether the shooting was linked to political activity.
For now, NDC members attacked in Obuoffia Ward remains a developing story, with details expected to emerge as authorities investigate the incident.
