Adebola Akin-Bright, a 12-year-old kid who underwent treatment at the hospital, allegedly had his intestines vanish, but the management of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, or LASUTH, has denied any wrongdoing.
Abiodun Deborah, the patient’s mother, had already pleaded with the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to look into the strange disappearance of her son’s intestines following corrective surgery for intestinal obstruction in July of this year.
Abiodun claims that her son was referred to LASUTH from Obitoks Medical Centre in Alimosho, where he had previously undergone surgery for a ruptured appendix and another procedure for intestinal obstruction. To her shock, however, the consultant at LASUTH informed her that her son’s small intestine was missing following the corrective surgery.
However, the LASUTH management stated in a reaction on its account on X (previously Twitter), @LASUTHikeja. While it acknowledged that the patient in question underwent corrective surgery, it emphasized that LASUTH did not purposefully remove any organs or body parts from the patient, who was referred to the tertiary healthcare facility after undergoing two surgeries in a private hospital.
The hospital management assured that it is cooperating with the state agency that is already looking into the rather unfortunate case while explaining that it has a thorough report outlining the findings of a high-powered panel that it assembled to look into the potential outcomes of the case.
In a viral video, a mother implied that a private hospital and LASUTH were at odds over her son’s reported loss of intestines after surgery. The hospital management, according to the statement, “needs to clarify the situation.”
“Our hospital is a first-rate tertiary facility with extremely competent and knowledgeable medical consultants. We also have cutting-edge facilities available.
“The patient in question underwent two procedures in a private hospital before being referred to our facility. He needed to be thoroughly optimized in our facilities before having a repair surgery.
“During the procedure, which was performed by a skilled pediatric surgeon and her staff, several odd results were found. These intraoperative discoveries are captured on camera. Despite being apprised of these facts, the mother seemed to remain in denial.
The hospital has a thorough report on the conclusions from a powerful panel that it promptly assembled to investigate all potential outcomes of this case. There is no doubt that our facility performed a corrective procedure and did not purposefully remove any organ or tissue.
“We sympathize with the patient’s family. We think that receiving money from any source will be appropriate, but we don’t think that using social media to blackmail the state government is the ideal strategy.
In the statement, it was stated that “the hospital management is cooperating with the state agency which is already investigating this rather unfortunate case.”
