Babatunji Wusu –
The country’s rivers and waterways should be protected from pollution and problems related to climate change, according to the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
This, according to the article, will support the integration of water resources and help rivers recover from harm caused by smog, urbanization, climate change, and other human activities.
The announcement was made by Engr. Joseph Utsev, minister of water resources and sanitation, at the World Water Day celebration in Abuja this year, which had as its main theme “The incredible natural, cultural, and recreational values of rivers, lakes, and streams in our communities” with the subtheme “Rights of Rivers.”
The government’s intention to treat rivers and lakes as living things deserving of fundamental rights, he claimed, was supported by the event’s topic.
For the maintenance of aquatic habitats and the socioeconomic development of the country, the minister claimed that the safety of rivers would provide a synergy of both surface and groundwater.
Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, the permanent secretary of the ministry, emphasized the importance of group efforts to save rivers because they are the primary sources of fresh water for life sustenance.
The symbolic tree planting and cleanup of the Jabi Lake bank were the ceremony’s high points.
